My First Malpelo Trip in 2022

My First Malpelo Trip in 2022
July 24, 2022 by Sten Johansson

I’m back in Colombia for my first of three 2022 trips to Malpelo.  I came with divers who have become friends over the years, as well as a couple of new ones: Kabir and Andres.

A very short update on my Malpelo trips in 2022

The hammerheads were there on my first trip, but we did not get them on each dive.  They were not in solid schools this time, but we saw a lot of animals, a lot of life.  Maybe I was the one who wanted to show more; but my divers, who were very experienced from multiple dives in Cocos, Galapagos and Socorro, seem to have had a great time on the trip.

I enjoyed my first trip to Malpelo, especially the company of the dive team.  If my groups were all like this, I can do this work all day long!

Many thanks to:
Solid diver Michael, who is doing a back-to-back Malpelo;
Skilled diver Martin;
Cool and experienced Luca;
Detailed communicator Penny;
“New kid on the block” Andres;
and Kabir the filmer, so calm and professional;

Each one of them is a character and part of the team. I did not bring them to Malpelo, except for Michael; but by coincidence I have dived with Martin, Luca and Penny, as well as Mike, in other destinations before.

Here’s a photo of us.  I’ll be going back in Malpelo together with Mike in a few days.

Hope to see you soon again here or in other waters!

I don’t have many images to show, so I will let the gang post them. Now that my laptop has been revived and I can actually type without my fingers pressing three keys at the same time, I will be taking more photos and writing about my Malpelo trips in 2022.

There is one (1) spot left on my trip in October.  If you would like to join me, please email me or send me a message on my website.  More information on the trip here: Malpelo Liveaboard Diving

You have a good spirit and I would be happy to dive with you again. Keep doing what you do. You have the eye…

Dives Waiting To Happen

I'm looking for six (6) divers so that I can do a half-boat charter onboard Ferox

I will work as a crew member, but I will give full attention to my 6 divers. I will do my best as a guide and I won’t rest until we are on land. I can help with improving your vegetarian food, but not with your chocolate on your pillow. In that case you are not the diver I want to guide.

More info

This is not a destination for fainthearted divers.

Strong current, big surge, and waves crashing on the sheer rocky island that you can only get on by climbing a 10-meter-long rope ladder hanging from a ramp that sticks out from the island. IF it’s calm.
